A Landlord Forum took place at the Alhambra Theatre on Wednesday 21st February 2024. A number of council officers attended to talk about some of the options being explored to increase the supply of housing for households in need. One of those options being explored is whether the council should set up a social lettings agency. It should be stressed that the council is currently undertaking early feasibility work around this and no decision has been presented or taken on whether to implement this sort of scheme. However, to help inform this process, we are inviting private landlords to take part in a short survey to gauge whether there is an appetite for this type of service.
The closing date for responses: 12 noon Monday 3 June 2024
What is a social lettings agency?
Social letting agencies have been in operation for many years particularly in areas where extreme housing shortages exist. Either the council or a lead organisation normally runs the social lettings agency often with an arrangement in place to lease privately rented properties for a set period of time and then letting the properties to people who are in housing need. The rent received by the landlord is typically set at the Local Housing Allowance (LHA) rate less any management fee that applies depending upon the type of service being provided.
