Consultation has concluded

You are being asked to have your say on the removal of two Air Quality Management Areas (AQMAs) in the district as Nitrogen Dioxide air pollution levels decrease.

Lancaster City Council is consulting you as it is proposing to revoke the two air quality management area (AQMA) designations in Carnforth and Galgate. The two AQMAs were designated due to likely exceedances of the set annual mean objective pollutant level for nitrogen dioxide. Copies of the AQMA designation orders can be found at :-

Maps showing the locations of these two areas and monitoring sites used over the past 15 years are shown below. Also view the areas on the AQMA and monitoring location and monitoring results map

The air quality monitoring results (for annual mean nitrogen dioxide concentrations) from sites we have used over recent years are shown in the two graphs below (the results for individual sites can also be seen via the map link provided above).

The results show that since 2017 we have not monitored any exceedance of the annual mean objective standard for nitrogen dioxide (set at 40 µg/m3) in either AQMA location and that generally there is an overall declining trend in pollution levels. We anticipate that considering the general ongoing replacement of vehicles within the general traffic fleet (with newer, improved emission standard vehicles) and the projected transition to electric vehicles over coming years that any future exceedance of the nitrogen dioxide pollutant objective standard in these locations is now unlikely. On this basis we consider that it is now appropriate to revoke the two AQMAs but would welcome your view and opinion on this step before we instigate such an action.

Please note: We do not propose to revoke the AQMA covering Lancaster city centre at this time. This consultation relates to the Carnforth and Galgate AQMAs only. We will also continue to monitor concentrations of nitrogen dioxide at Carnforth and Galgate, as well as other locations across the district, regardless of any AQMA designations.
